Our latest Marvel creative retreat was this week, where a bunch of us writers come to New York and sit in a room with our editors and publishers, and for three days straight we all talk comics and make fun of each other. While I can't tell you exactly what was talked about, I can say with confidence that this retreat was more jam-packed with awesome ideas than any retreat I've ever been to. I always come home from these things fired up to get back to work. After this one, even more-so.

Among the things I'm working on right now are AVENGERS VS. X-MEN and its tie-ins issues of WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN. I'm happy with the momentum we've all got going on X-MEN right now, so trust me, I'm very conscious about trying to maintain that during the tie-in months. Our story will not suddenly stop and be replaced but a bunch of crossover stuff that has no connection to what I was doing before. It will all flow together, including in some ways you might not be expecting.

The other big highlight of the week for me was dinner at David Chang's momofuku ssäm, where thanks to C.B. Cebulski, a bunch of us gorged on a ridiculous spread of duck, steak, fish, pork buns and spicy sausage. Over dinner I told Remender and Hickman why I think Session 9 is awesome and Christopher Nolan not so much. I also extolled the virtues of Exorcist III but I'm not sure I won them over quite like the pork buns did.

Thoughts on the end of 2011

It's been a busy year for me. For which I am exceedingly grateful. Children, as you may have heard, are very expensive. As are the exotic murder safaris I sometimes go on to relax (we all have our vices, do we not?). As we enter 2012, I find myself in a period of transition. I wrote a little about this yesterday in my final column for CBR. But to to sum it up, three of my current writing gigs will be coming to an end in 2012. PUNISHERMAX and SCALPED are both ending (by my choice, not because they've been cancelled), and I'm wrapping up my run on WOLVERINE after about 50 issues spread across 10 years. So 2012 will be about charging ahead with my two newest series, WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and eventually taking on a few new challenges as well.

As you may have heard, one of those new challenges will be this:

I expect you'll be hearing even more and more about that one in the coming months. Suffice to say, it's the biggest, boldest thing I've ever been involved in, and man, is it going to be fun.

Beyond that, we'll just have to wait and see, I guess. Perhaps I'll even try to post here again with some regularity, now that I don't have a column to write.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to everybody out there who read and supported my work this past year. I appreciate every last damn one of you. And for my part, hopefully the best is still yet to come.

Today's a Hulk day for me. I'm working on the biggest fight scene of my career. Much smashing. Also building onto my master outline, working on my extended plans. First year looks to be shaping up nicely. There are new characters, a crazy new dynamic for Hulk and Banner and ultimately a big connection to one of the Marvel U's premiere villains.

Now back to the regularly scheduled smashing.

Post-SDCC wrap-up: Scalped

The other bit of me-related news that came out of San Diego Comic Con was that SCALPED is ending with issue #60. Still feels weird to see it finally spelled out so definitely, but this has actually been the plan for quite a while now. This was my choice. We were not canceled or forced into an ending. The series will be ending just the way I've always imagined it ending. There are a couple of smaller stories I always thought I might get to which I ultimately won't, but those were set aside in the interest of giving the series as solid a finish as possible. There won't be any more stand-alone issues. Instead we'll have two final big arcs to bring everything home, with Guera drawing every issue. Expect a death or two and hopefully at least a couple of surprises. And expect everyone to get the ending they've got coming to them, good or bad. In many ways, the entire story of SCALPED will ultimately be about what happens in these last ten issues. Thanks again to everybody who's stuck with us this long. And I promise you, we're all doing our best not to let you down.

And know that the ending of SCALPED will not be the end of me doing creator-owned work. Not by a long shot. The wheels are already turning in regards to my next creator-owned book. And Guera and I are already talking about our next project as well. So as always, stay tuned.

Post-SDCC wrap-up: X-Men

The cover for WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN also came out last week, at least in a mostly blacked-out form. I've enjoyed reading all the speculation online about who's who here. Nobody's even come close to guessing everybody. Nor can they, as a couple of these characters are brand new. I'll also add that this isn't the entire cast of the series. Not even close.

It was also revealed that Ron Garney is rejoining me on WOLVERINE for another arc, this one titled "Goodbye, Chinatown," and guest-starring Gorilla Man, Fat Cobra and some crazy Kung Fu villains, including a few holdovers from my WOLVERINE: MANIFEST DESTINY mini-series.

Post-SDCC wrap-up: Hulk

Eventhough I didn't go to San Diego Comic Con, I've still somehow found myself floundering in its wake, struggling to get caught up on work. Guess I might as well have gone and enjoyed the weather for a bit.

And eventhough I wasn't there, I still had quite a few announcements come out of the con.

The biggest is probably that I'm the writer on a new INCREDIBLE HULK series that debuts in October. It's drawn by Marc Silvestri, first arc is titled "Hulk: Asunder" and it features a Hulk and Banner who have been split apart and set at odds. I've been wanting to tackle the Hulk for a while now, so I'm happy to finally be involved with this. Yes, along with everything else I'm doing, this means my schedule is awfully crazy right now, but that will be sorting itself out. Stay tuned.

And holy crap, I'm writing the Hulk!

Of the non-superhero franchises currently active in comics, Planet of the Apes would be on my short-list of things I would love to write, along with Conan and Godzilla. Someday perhaps.

No San Diego for me

When you're a comic book creator, come time for San Diego Comic Con each year, you start getting tons of emails from people who all just assume you're going to be there.

This year I will not.

While I love the city of San Diego and while I've had some great times at the con in the past, the show is now so massive and busy and crazy that it can totally kick my ass and leave me a blubbering shell of a man by the time I make it back home. And it also eats up at least a full week of work-time, which I can't afford to do right now (though I admit that's not stopping me from attending a show in Spain in September. Aviles! Can't wait!). If you're a comic fan and you've never been to San Diego Comic Con before, I wholeheartedly encourage you to go. It is an overwhelming but exhilarating experience to suddenly find yourself part of what's basically a miniature city populated almost exclusively with people just like you.

Even though I'm not attending, I will still have a new project announced there, so be on the look-out for that, if you're the kind of person who looks out for that sort of thing. And as for what shows I will be attending this year, check the list to the right. Hope to see you at one or another.

Until then, I'll still be here, along the banks of the Big Muddy, drinking Dirty Bastards and trying to stay dry.

Thoughts on SCALPED #50

Fifty issues. Still blows my mind. Thank you, fans of Scalped, from all of us involved with its production for keeping our little series chugging along for so long.

This fiftieth issue was especially fun, what with all of the special guest artists involved. Some behind-the-scenes info on this issue:

My original plan was to do a full-on anthology issue, using not just guest artists but guest writers as well, all doing stories set within the world of Scalped, though not necessarily utilizing any of our main characters. Unfortunately we had to scale back a bit from there and keep things to our regular page count. No ill will from me in regards to that. Times are tough right now after all, especially for little books like Scalped. So what to do instead?

A few years back when Scalped was just getting started, Guera and I agreed to do a story for a western anthology. I wrote it and Guera started drawing it, but ultimately our schedule on Scalped became too demanding and we had to back out of the anthology. We'd been looking for a place for that story ever since. So with just a couple tweaks that became "The Art of Scalping," the first half of Scalped #50.

The second story, "The Art of Survival," came from a desire to have guest artists do pin-ups but to be able to incorporate the pin-ups into a story. Our list for artists we wanted was long, but some were no-brainers. Jordi Bernet HAD to draw Carol, as far as I was concerned. Dean Haspiel was someone I'd been talking to forever about contributing to Scalped. Same with Denys Cowan, who we'd tried to fit into the series before. When I thought of a Catcher pin-up, Brendan McCarthy was the first artist who came to mind, and thankfully he was already a fan of the book. Getting Timothy Truman onboard meant a lot to me, as his series Scout has always been one of my favorite comics. And Jill Thompson and Steve Dillon, again, no brainers, as they're two of the absolute best artists in Vertigo history. Thankfully everybody we asked said yes.

And then there's Igor Kordey, whose inclusion was pretty much fated. We actually have Igor to thank for Guera being involved with Scalped in the first place, as it was Igor who first suggested to his friend Guera that he send some samples of his work to editor Will Dennis at Vertigo. Those samples showed up in Will's email the same time we were looking for an artist for Scalped. And everyone pretty much knew right away that we'd found our guy. So we already owed Igor a great deal of thanks, and Guera had been wanting for a while to get Igor involved with Scalped. I was already a huge fan of Igor's work going back to his Marvel days. But I still remember sitting in a hotel lobby with my iPad and being blown away when I first got the email with Igor's pages for Scalped #50. Here's hoping this is the beginning of seeing much more of Igor's work again.

So that's Scalped #50. Of course, the main question people keep asking me now is, How much longer does Scalped have? When is it ending?

And the answer is...

I'm still not telling.

We certainly don't have another 50 to go, but as for the specific issue number, I'd like to keep that under my hat for just a bit longer. Let's just say that plot-wise, things are about to start heating up. And fast. As in issue #51, the first part of the next big arc, "Knuckle Up." From here on out, it's all about the chickens coming home to roost. Some folks will live. Some will die. Some will live but maybe wished they'd died.

As announced today over the AP wire, X-MEN REGENESIS is the tagline for the new core group of X-books spinning out of SCHISM.

Kieron Gillen will be shepherding UNCANNY X-MEN with Carlos Pacheco and Greg Land.

And I'll be writing WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN. My collaborator? The amazing Chris Bachalo.

More interviews with both Kieron and I will be hitting in the coming days. There's not much we can reveal at this point though, as everything hings on events that will be soon be unfolding in the pages of SCHISM.

I can't say who's going to be on my team, other than Wolverine of course. I can't say where they'll be or what they'll be doing. I will say, don't assume you know the full roster for either team based off this one promo image. Both sides will feature their share of surprises.

I can also say, with profound certainty, that I am having the time of my life working on this series.

Been a busy month. Jesus. X-MEN SCHISM is officially wrapped, as of today. Now I only have two other Super Secret New Marvel Projects on which to work.

I've added a new stop on my convention schedule for the year. I'll be making my first trip to the homeland of Wolverine himself when I head to FanExpo Canada in August. Can't wait to meet ya, Canucklehead comic book fans.

Been catching up on my comic reading. Scott Snyder is killing it on DETECTIVE COMICS. As is Remender on X-FORCE. Gotta be my two favorite current books, along with Grant Morrison's ever amazing Batman work.

Making my way through the Harry Potter movies with my son. Just watched #5, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, which I thought was by far the best one yet. Love the big wizarding battle at the end. Makes Gandalf vs. Saruman in FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING look like a bit of awkward fumbling.

I recently deleted my old Facebook page and created a couple new ones. The old one had gotten rather unwieldy and useless. The new fan page I made is here. I have a personal page as well, but that's only for folks I actually know, so I can keep up with out-of-town friends and such.

Go Mavs. God, I hate the Lakers.

Man, it's been a crazy week. WonderCon was an absolute blast. Seriously one of the best cons I've ever done. Thanks to everybody who came out, especially those of you who braved my spotlight panels.

In case you missed it, my next big gig was announced there. It's X-MEN: SCHISM, a five issue mini-series that'll be the big X-event for the summer. It features lots of giant robots, lots of screaming and pretty much every mutant you can think of. But mostly it's about Cyclops and Wolverine and one of those "battle for the leadership of the X-Men" sorta stories. Plus there's an all-new Hellfire Club, and for Morrison fans, the return of Quentin Quire. And it's all drawn by the most amazing line-up of artists I've ever worked with: Carlos Pacheco, Frank Cho, Daniel Acuna, Alan Davis and Adam Kubert. Not too shabby, am I right?

And eventhough Cap is wrapped, Ron and I are already working on something else for later this year. Stay tuned.

Yes, I finally gave in and joined the Cult of Apple yesterday, and I must say, waiting in line to buy one of these new-fangled Wonder Tablets was a rather strange experience. There were hundreds of people there, though I managed to beat the bulk of the crowd by showing up right before lunch (sometimes it pays to not have a proper job). I then sat there and wrote comics all day and rather shamefully hid my Android phone from sight, lest the surrounding Apple enthusiasts roust me from the line in disgust. A cheer went up when the doors finally opened at 5. People were clutching their tickets, eager to get inside. "Are you excited?!?" the lady at the door asked me, once I'd made it to the front of the line. "Yes," I replied, though I don't think I seemed nearly excited enough for her taste. Later as I was coming out, new Magic Tablet in hand, the people at the door shouted "Congratulations!" like I had just accomplished something of great importance inside. Instead of having simply purchased a rather pricey new toy for myself and my family, which is what I thought I had just done. I walked away wondering if perhaps it was true. If perhaps I now truly was a better person than most everyone else in the world, merely because I'd had five free hours on a Friday to sit in a lawn chair in front of a suburban shopping center.

My wife has assured me I am not.

As for the Wonderful New Magic Orgasm In A Box Machine, it is indeed pretty cool. Or at least I'm assuming it will be once I've figured out how to fucking use it.

Knee-deep in work today. Trying to finish up my second issue of a super-big super-secret new project. Look for an announcement soon, probably at Wonder Con.

It's Wednesday, so if you're going to the comic store look for PUNISHERMAX #11, the long-awaited conclusion to the "Bullseye" arc. It has blood and vomit and severed fingers and other such lovelieness.

Also, there's a new edition of my WHERE THE HELL AM I column over at CBR about how sometimes writing doesn't go as planned. It's called "Sometimes It Sucks," though hopefully the column itself doesn't.

Back to work now. Then a trip to the comic store. Then sleep and dreams of a new NFL CBA.

And the newest is The Shadow of Scalped, which examines some of the themes of Scalped and looks at where they reappear in my other works.

It's extremely well-written and most definitely worth your time if you're at all a fan of anything I've ever done.

Thoughts on Rage Against the Machine

I mostly listen to alt-country and bluegrass these days (which as a teenager, I would've never believed could ever fucking happen). But every once in a while, like tonight, I'm reminded of how much I used to like Rage Against the Machine. You know, before they broke up. Tonight I was listening to their last studio album, Renegades, which is a collection of cover songs. A terrific and wildly diverse collection of cover songs. It is without a doubt my favorite Rage album. I dug all their stuff beginning with their 1992 debut, but looking back, too much of their original material seems a tad sophomoric and at times pretentious. But Renegades is just pure fun. It's an inspired grouping of covers that all showcase guitarist Tom Morello at his most wildly inventive. Unfortunately, I didn't feel the same about any of the Audioslave material that followed the dissolution of Rage. Perhaps in part because Chris Cornell's voice reminds me of someone trying to sing after they've been up all night vomiting. In other words, I'm not a fan. Not that Rage vocalist Zack de la Rocha is all that golden-throated or really even that great of a rapper. But nevertheless something about the combo worked. For me at least. So basically what I'm saying is, Rage, I miss you. I know you're supposedly working on a new album. Here's hoping it's your best yet. Regardless, I'll be listening.
